Palio del Niballo

Quarta Domenica di Giugno

Every year, the month of June sees the rekindling of medieval rivalries: weapons and knights, the traditional flag-throwers and musicians are all revived of the oldest medieval jousts in Italy comes to life: the Tournament of the Bigorda d’Oro ( the Golden Lance) and Palio del Niballo.

The Niballo is one of the most ancient and well-known Medieval tournaments. The Palio del Niballo, which started as the “Quintana of the Niballo” and “Barbarossa’s tournament”, dates back to 1164, when Emperor Federic I visited Faenza as guest of Enrico and Guido Manfredi, the Signori of the town.

The Niballo is fought respecting ancient traditions, and with all the passion and drive of the period the costumes are based on: the Renaissance.

The Bigorda d’Oro  tournament is a chivalrous event especially for young people.

The name Bigorda comes from the Provencal term “beort”, meaning to compete in a tournament.

The same word is used for the light lance employed in modern tournaments.

This exciting and superbly entertaining contest begins with a historical procession that displays the towns’ Rioni in a dazzle of glistening armour and colourful costumes, accompanied by the rhythm of tambourines and the flapping of banners at the town Stadium, the setting for the Palio and Bigorda.

The challenging parties are five historical districts of Faenza: White, Yellow, , Black, Red, Green.

Consisting of 20 rounds, the competition takes place as follows: starting from the same position, the two contenders, at the Magistrate’s command, race in apposite directions around a horseshoe shaped circuit until they meet at the Niballo, the Saracen warrior representing ancient Faenza’s Moorish enemy.

The two hundred metres are covered at full gallop. The aim of the competition is to hit one of the targets on the extremities of the Niballo’s arms with tip of the lance: the first to strike his target trips the device that raises the arm on his side of the track. With each round the winner gains a shield with his rival’s colours: the Bigorda or Palio, is won by the Rione that wins the most shields. At the end of the 5 “rounds” the Rione with the greatest number of shields is proclaimed the winner of the quintain.
